Our Three Foundation Options

Searching for a reliable and durable foundation for your pole building? Burkholder Custom Construction offers post frame, block, and poured wall options, each tailored to your specific needs.

Burkholder Custom Construction LLC offers three distinct foundation types to suit various needs for pole buildings. The post-frame foundation is the most straightforward and cost-effective option, ideal for basic structural support. For enhanced stability and strength, block foundations are available, providing a solid base that can also accommodate a crawl space or partial basement. The most durable and versatile choice is the poured-wall foundation, which is capable of supporting any building size and shape while offering superior insulation, water resistance, and the flexibility to create a full basement or a slab floor.

Typical Post Frame Cross Section

The most economical and common choice, this foundation uses treated posts set into the ground for a quick and simple build. It provides a strong, practical base, making it ideal for standard pole buildings.

Poured Wall Cross Section

The most durable and versatile option, a poured-wall foundation is a solid, seamless concrete structure. It provides superior support for any building size and offers the best resistance to moisture and fire.

Typical Block Cross Section

Offering increased stability and strength, this foundation is built with concrete blocks on a footing. It is a great option for projects that require more structural support or a crawl space for added utility.

1. Post-Frame Foundations (The Economical Choice)

The post-frame foundation is the hallmark of modern pole building construction. It utilizes highly durable, treated structural posts set directly into the ground or onto concrete "cookies" at the base of a pier.

  • Best For: Agricultural barns, workshops, detached garages, and standard pole buildings.

  • The Build Process: We excavate holes below the frost line (typically 36”–48” depending on local code) to ensure the building remains stable during freeze-thaw cycles.

  • Key Advantages:

    • Cost Efficiency: Requires significantly less concrete and excavation than a full perimeter wall.

    • Speed: The fastest foundation to install, allowing framing to begin almost immediately.

    • Versatility: Excellent for uneven terrain where a full wall would be cost-prohibitive.

  • Expansion Tip: To maximize the lifespan of this foundation, we recommend the Green Post™ system or PermaColumns, which eliminate wood-to-soil contact and prevent rot.

2. Poured Concrete Wall Foundations (The Premium Standard)

For those seeking maximum durability and the option for a full basement, the poured wall is the industry gold standard. This creates a seamless, monolithic barrier against the elements.

  • Best For: Residential homes, high-value commercial facilities, and buildings requiring full basement storage.

  • The Build Process: After pouring a reinforced concrete footing, we set up high-strength forms and pour liquid concrete with integrated rebar reinforcement.

  • Key Advantages:

    • Superior Strength: Poured walls have a higher flexural and compressive strength than block walls, making them more resistant to the pressure of surrounding soil.

    • Water Tightness: Because there are no mortar joints, there are fewer opportunities for water seepage or "wicking" through the foundation.

    • Fire & Pest Resistance: Provides a 2-hour+ fire rating and is completely impenetrable by termites and rodents.

  • Technical Spec: We use high-PSI concrete mixes designed to withstand the specific climate loads of the Ohio region.

3. Concrete Block Foundations (The Modular Solution)

A block foundation (Concrete Masonry Unit or CMU) provides a middle ground between post-frame and poured walls. It consists of individual blocks stacked with mortar on a concrete footing.

  • Best For: Crawl spaces, additions to existing structures, and projects with limited site access for heavy concrete trucks.

  • The Build Process: We lay a level footing and then "course" the blocks to the desired height. For added strength, we often fill the "cores" of the blocks with concrete and vertical rebar.

  • Key Advantages:

    • Ease of Utility Access: Ideal for creating a crawl space that allows easy access to plumbing and electrical systems under the floor.

    • Adaptability: If your building design has complex angles or requires precise height adjustments, block is often easier to manipulate on-site.

    • Structural Stability: Offers more lateral strength than post-frame for larger, heavy-load structures.
